He wanted to be hailed a hero and saviour for having a genius idea (that others would have to design, build, test and operate, but that’s just implementation details; obviously the difficult part we’re all too dumb for is coming up with this brilliant stuff in the first place).

Snubbing him so and rejecting his solution implies that his genius isn’t clearly visible to the rest of us, which obviously must be an insult.

The fact that he chose this specific accusation to throw around is oddly specific, however.
