I’ve been meaning to make a sheath for this knife for the longest time.

I found it intimidating as my first sheath, but I eventually found my focus and rhythm.

I stumbled upon some valuable lessons during the journey, but eventually finished what I can now call my own first sheath! Yes! Small steps!

I found bushcraft knives too cumbersome for cooking, kitchen knives too exaggerated for camping, so this 6inch size coupled with the belt loop made the most sense for my purpose.

Thank you kindly for stopping by.

      Thank you!

I did not, which is why I have a rivet at the beginning of the stitches.

I’m hoping it’ll prevent the seams from being sliced. Although not ideal, I didn’t feel comfortable with putting in a welt at my skill level. Maybe next time!

The rivet is made of a softer metal, and it is tight enough that the blade shall not meet the rivet.

My wife does leather work. We were asked by a coworker to make a sheath for his old punch dagger. I made a small pocket out of wood for the knife to sit in. That gave her an excuse to try out wet molding and formed the leather around the pocket. Keeps the stitches safe, and because it gets wrapped up, doesn’t really matter how the pocket looks.

That sounds like a reasonable approach. I haven’t tried wet molding yet, but it’s definitely something I’ve been wanting to try. I must learn to burnish first though.

Do you have any photos of the sheath by any chance?

I’m sorry. It wasn’t for me, so I didn’t bother to take a picture. I can ask the coworker to take a picture. Probably won’t get a shot tomorrow. Likely Wednesday or Thursday before he’ll send it.

When I told my wife that you wanted to see the picture, she was a little unhappy because she said it wasn’t her best work. Coworker brought it in today. Here’s the picture, ahead of schedule. He is happy with it, so I suppose that’s what matters. I had thought she would attach the strap vertically instead of horizontally, but she’s the leather worker. I just support her.

This is an image of the core I made. She had made sheaths for her leather working knives before, but she put the threads on the inside instead of the outside on one of her first ones. I figured the pocket would keep the leather safe. Just cut it out of a piece of scrap and glued it tight.
