Welcome to the Melbourne Community Daily Discussion Thread.
I was expecting not to receive my full pay rise this financial year regardless of meeting my performance plan because I haven’t been in this particular role for the full financial year… but I just got an email saying congratulations and that my pay rise is coming through on the next pay run along with backpay from July 1! Yay!!
Sometimes things just work out.
Hell yeah.!
It’s still technically a pay cut when looking at the cost of living/inflation increases but let’s try not to dwell… nobody is getting raises to meet those increases unless they’re changing jobs. It’s still progression! …yay!
When’s the party mate?
I did the maths and it ends up being an extra $108 a fortnight in my bank I think so I’m not sure if I’m inviting people onto my yacht just yet lol
Sat outside Brunetti on Flinders Lane with a drink being Melbourne as fuuuuuuuck 🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌
Had an MRI this morning, first time. I knew it was going to be an uncomfortable experience but I wasn’t expecting to feel completely stoned afterwards. Had to sit in the car for 20 minutes before I felt capable of driving home and even now I still feel a bit spacey. Might have a nap.
Were you medicated?
No, wasn’t even offered as an option!
I hope you get a good outcome me matey 🫂
Thanks, should find out within 48 hours. Alarmingly one of the checks the referring neurologist requested was to see if I’d had a stroke :0/
Oh dear
When I had my shoulder done a few years ago the sound was incredible.
Yeah it was intense
Jaysus, didn’t they tell you to have someone come pick you up or drive you home? Not very responsible of the MRI provider I think. And bloody dangerous if you are going to be driving.
They didn’t suggest it, I suppose because I wasn’t going to be medicated
Had one on my head when I had chronic migraines. Felt wack af after too.
On the other hand, I had one done on my ankle and was okay after. 🤷♀️
Did they identify a cause of the migraines? It was my head and neck, took about 20mins
Nothing in my head; theory is that the migraines were caused by psychological stress (was with my abusive ex at the time, and mum was just diagnosed with schizophrenia and refusing meds). My MRI and CAT scan were both clear, and the migraines cleared up when I left ex and mum haha
MRIs are so cool tbh, but I always freak out a little and ask the nurses if I’ve taken out all my piercings in case I missed one haha
Well that’s great news that they cleared up.
Re: metal…one of the questions asked if I was aware of having any bullets lodged in me! lolYes! They asked me that too! Haha, I was like “i hope not! I dont think so???”
Windows are being replaced with double glaze today, at 7.30am.
Also have a combination of medicine issues with a lil bit of food poisoning. Makes for my first sickday 🤦♀️
On the brightside: i can call workforce today to remove the hold on my payment. Apparently not going to the employment training for the last two days of it last week (bc I gained FT employment) means I’m a bad dole bludger and must be punished with even more poverty ugh 🙄
That’s awesome, they make such a big difference. Fingers crossed the installation goes smoothly. Can’t wait to get some for our place in … 5-10 years, probably
Lucky duck, enjoy the double glazing when it’s in - it’s SO good! So much warmer and quieter
🧻🚽
Sorry your feeling shitty (excuse the pun). Hope your work is chill about it
oooo who’d you go with for the glazing? Pricing? We’re eyeing off between that and magnetite
I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you, it was organised via the body corp/our landlord; we’re just renters who were told they were coming to do the thing.
Actually, I just checked my emails and the body corp says the works were/are completed by Andreatta Group. No idea on pricing.
fuck me, an actual proactive landlord!
Ooh take care buddy!
I’m really not adult enough for my job.
Meh…let the adults worry about that stuff.
My boss talks about his kid (he’s like early to mid 30s) and I’m like “I finally got to play DND with my friends :D” (I’m late 20s).
The prevailing theory for the use of eyepatches, in the case of piracy on the high seas and maritime combat, is that they will help preserve your “dark adapted vision”.
In such cases where you need to transition belowdecks you can maintain combat effectiveness in low light conditions.
Oh. I thought it might have been because you’ve accidentally poked an eye with your hook hand while swatting a fly.
sailors would sometimes lose an eye from ropes flicking up
they would also lose a lower limb from a rope accidently coiling around an ankle
ships are dangerous, the sails exert strong forces and anchors are very heavy
the dark adapted vision thing is probably because they used sextants for navigation and that meant looking at the sun
You use a sextant at night.
in the Northern hemisphere because they have a pole star. We don’t have a pole star so we use the sun at noon.
really? so was there no astronimcal navigation in the southern hemisphere…?
squeee, I’m going to visit new Ted Cat tomorrow morning, I really hope I can get him. 💗😸
I hope you get him too.
Don’t forget the cat tax when you bring him home!
For sure, there will be a million pics. 😍
Another unseasonably warm morning, bringing with it both pleasure at the temperature and a sense of existential dread at the larger meaning of it all. I plan to work out my inner angst by raining destruction upon the leaf-curl ridden nectarine tree that’s never produced any fruit, and the gall wasp ridden lemon tree that is little more than a twig with leaves that constantly surprises me by the fact that it somehow manages to still be alive.
Your pleasure and dread description summarises exactly how I feel about it.
Unfortunately leaf curl is inevitable and can only be managed by spraying. If this isn’t a preference yeah I agree time to get rid of the tree and plant something more robust. As for the lemon tree, my recommendation is to ignore any and all advice that says to cut off the galls. Spent a few years cutting off galls from my lemon tree, and the poor thing could never recover because it was getting cut back too much. Left it totally alone for a couple of years, just fertilised, and it is now lush and heaving with fruit. It is also full of galls but that seems to have zero impact on its fruit producing ability. There is enough tree for both me and the wasps to share.
Leaf curl is nasty. I’ve had good results from Bordeaux mixture - which is copper sulfate based. My lemon saplings have had all their leaves chewed off by something, so I have moved the pots and sprayed them with soapy water. Will hose them off tonight if it hasn’t rained by then.
27 today! 😁😁😁
17 tomorrow… :( 😦😦😦
Damn I’m going to enjoy the sun for all it’s worth today as long as it doesn’t go hiding.
HBP
Figures it’ll go south the day I head back to my place, bereft of an automobile! Good thing I have many sturdy umbrellas and a nice raincoat.
I am one of those people who hate chasing up money even though I have been owed it. The person I was dealing with is nice but they haven’t paid me for some work I did, so do you think a simple “Hey, how’s it going? I was wondering if you had a chance to talk to payroll/admin regarding the payment for [event] we discussed?” would be fine?
Yep it’s on them to feel bad about them not paying you, not you. That’s a very reasonable email. Can’t imagine how you could word it any nicer or gentler.
That sounds completely reasonable
I always feel horrible when I owe people money, but I also feel horrible asking people for money. It sucks.
I don’t think that’s a bad thing to do though.
I freaking HATE when people use my full name when my email, contact details and profile are all my short name. Think calling someone Benjamin when their email signature and address are both just Ben. Its condescending as shit, and like some sort of power play or something.
Ok TinyBreakdancer
Bobert instead of Bob, or Wilberforce instead of Will?
Bartholomew instead of Barry
We all know it’s actually Jimothy
I remember reading somewhere that Bartholomew is my name in some other language (like John, Jan, Ian, Sean etc are all the same name). It’s just occurred to me that I’ve just accepted this as a fact for decades without ever actually looking into whether it’s true.
So now I’m just gonna come out and say it: don’t call me Bartholomew. Thanks.
Bortholomew
Joshua?
I feel so bad when I’m emailing people who don’t sign off but they have a name that can be shortened. Like a Joshua or something. I don’t want to seem rude by saying Josh, but I also know people who don’t like the long version of their name (I hate the short version of my name and I have another nickname that is popular with people who have the same name as me).
I kind of have an opposite feeling to this, I have a long first name that is frequently shortened, and I get terribly annoyed when I give it to people and they go straight in with “hey banana” instead of “hey bananafungus” like we’re old pals.
I give people at work the option, “Hey you dont have to be Samuel if you dont want to, you can just be Sam” so I know their preferred name by their signature.
Decided to do a hard reset (basically don’t sleep, not even a nap after your last shift) after night shift to get it out of the way, and holy hell am I being reminded why I don’t do it this way. I think I can hear and smell colours at this point! Just keep having to remind myself doing it this way means more holiday hours.
Grocery shopping done, two boxes of stuff dropped off at the op shop, cardboard boxes collected and first load of washing in. \0/. Was going to say on to the next task, but Sammi has jumped jumped onto my lap and has made it plain it’s snuggle time. Eh well, don’t mind having a breather.
Sounds like a productive day and a perfect to take a break.
It would be even better if you could get lunch and coffee and do that with Sammi in your lap.
Unfortunately can’t get lunch with Sammi in my lap. 😂. She’s retired to the other couch for her afternoon nap and I’ve flopped on the bed after doing more stuff. I thought Zooks was going to join me, but she’s evidently got Important Cat Business to do.
Chook is in the oven roasting, tidying continues
I forgot to buy cheese. Now I’m destined for a cheese-less Wednesday. This is the worst thing to happen to me all September.
Oh that is no gouda. You must feel unfettad sadness. No cheer for you.
triple points!
Ooh cheese. Don’t mind if I do.
