Speed on VHS—pure 90s action bliss.

This is the movie that reignited Keanu Reeves’ career, turned Sandra Bullock into a superstar, and let Dennis Hopper chew up every scene he touched.

Sure, the premise is ridiculous. But that’s the point. You don’t watch Speed for realism—you watch it for the thrill. For the impossible stunts. For the moment a bus jumps a freeway gap and somehow sticks the landing. Praise the movie gods.

And honestly? If you’re firing up a VCR, this is exactly the kind of tape you want spinning.

@movies

    Keanu is a wonder. Speed is one of the many “you gotta be shitting me that looks so stupid” movies that he made that are excellent in so many ways.

    It started with Point Break and the latest iteration are the John Wick flicks.

    Pop quiz, Hot Shot. It’s 1995 and all 20 copies at your local Blockbuster are sold out. Are you going to hang around the store to see if someone miraculously returns it?

      Not enough time, guess I’m grabbing one of dozens of available copies of The Flintstones or City Slicker 2: The Hunt for Curly’s Gold

    The story Bullock tells of the audition between her and Reeves is bonkers. The Smartless podcast with Bullock is worth listening to for this alone.

    Sandy is a gem and does not get enough Hollywood respect. She’s got sooo much talent and skill!

    If anyone wants to go really deep on the history and making of Speed, check out the podcast 50mph. Fifty episodes that tell the story from start to end and has an interview with Keanu and Sandra in one of the last episodes.

    Really good stuff. You learn than Speed was originally just set up as a cheap action film, they never expected the success they achieved.

    Also, the script was briefly considered as an idea for the next Beverly Hills Cop movie.

    🎵Bus from Speed🎵

    I finally got around to watching this last year and enjoyed it, unsurprisingly. The jump is tremendously dumb (seriously, could they not even have contrived a ramp‽) but other than that I was happy to buy into the silliness. You chew that scenery, Hopper!
