Young Americans spend much more time alone than they did in the past. According to data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ American Time Use Survey, people aged 15–29 spent about 45% more time alone in 2023 than in 2010.
Not really a surprise. The rise of social media, the lack of third spaces, and the high cost of everything are all factors leading to this statistic.
Tell me where in the suburbs people are supposed to hang out without having to pay to be there? How are young people supposed to afford any sort of entertainment for like a concert or movie when the prices are all jacked up? If you can’t afford your rent you’re not gonna leave the house to go spend more money. You’re gonna sit your fat ass on the phone and be alone on Instagram and the rest of the Internet cesspool.
