So stealth archer wins again?
It’s really useful for act 1 at least, where most casters have one spell, and it’s called “miss”.
Casters often feel at a massive disadvantage for casual fights. For a boss fight, casters are often the strongest, since you’ll blow all your spell slots. But for smaller fights, you want to preserve your spell slots and cantrips simply cannot keep up with martials. I mean, a single attack roll for a spell cantrip vs getting 2-3 attack roles that also do more damage total? Heck, my strongest martials can usually do at least double the damage of a spell caster’s cantrips.
Though at the same time, when I can blow the spell slot, no martial can outdo the AoE damage of reliable ol’ fireball or the likes. Just I can’t justify using my spell slots on a small number of weak enemies.
BG3 saves the day for low level casters by making rest and spell prep such a non-issue. Use it all. Rest rest and rest.
I’ve started to use my spells more and then resting more because you actually need to sleep to progress some story lines. I don’t think I did that enough for Act 1 and most of Act 2.
Also my gf and melee tanks many times also needed a full rest and I still had most of my spells slots so that wasn’t fun.
Though I might need to amp the difficulty a bit.
I agree with this mostly but I’ve got to add, I’ll give up a spell slot for magic missile on a few low hp enemies any day of the week. Being able to get 3 guaranteed kills if your enemies are low enough hp and spread out is actually really nice.
Imagine not blowing your fireballs and lightnings against level 1 mice when you’re level 10 and making your fighters regret running in headfirst.
That’s the ideal scenario, but really, camp supplies are so abundant in this game that it just doesn’t play out that way.
Blade Pact Warlock Supremacy!
Wait, we only get 2 atracks per turn even at max level?
Sigh. Dwarf fighter it is.
Relatable, but we really need a more elegant solution to vertical vs horizontal videos. I just measured, and that little square of video only used 15% of my screen.
It’s still better than a shorts link since it has actual controls.
Plus screen percentage only really matters for a meme if you are on your phone or a really really low pixel monitor.
Surprised monk rogue is so low. It’s been the most brutal dps build I’ve experienced so far. Three levels of rogue with thief for bonus actions and two levels of fighter for action surge ( always use two levels of fighter almost every time) is devastating. My strenght build monk puts out twice the amount of damage my ranger does, hits 100%of the time and doesn’t need any form of advantage apart from melee range. First turn usually means 8 attacks dealing 30+ damage each with the appropriate bonuses. That’s over 240 on first turn then +/-180 for at least the nex two turns if you don’t channel ki. Casual numbers right.
Edit: yeas it also needs tavern brawler which is a broken feat afaic.
I think a lot of it is influenced by the powerful tabletop builds and that most people don’t do more than one run or respec.
Monk and Thief were massively buffed for BG3.
Yeah tavern brawler STR bonus is just absurdly powerful here, nothing like the tabletop version.
I just saw a video on this, apparently if you skip fighter and put 9 into Monk you get AoE attacks instead which can be favourable to Action Surge
How long do you play at lvl12 though, really? Genuinely curious, since I haven’t beaten the game yet (barely in act 2)
You hit level 12 with probably 15-30 hours left depending how you run act 3.
I don’t know for sure, but I’ve heard some criticism that the level cap was too soon, but necessary for gameplay/roleplay reasons
They have the level cap at 12 which is much lower than the usual DnD cap of 20, but I thought it was well paced. The reason they stopped at 12 was because high lvl DnD exponentially gets more and more ridiculous.
Level cap seems well placed to me, obviously I want to keep getting more powerful but I think it would trivialise late game fights. The Final act seems more spread out, so it was probably easier to balance around you being level10-12 most of it.
Also you dont feel like you need to do everything as much when you hit level cap, its easier to skip things that dont feel righr for this playthrough.
So we are back to stealthy archer?
No matter the game, all roads lead back to it.
Gloom stalker thief is broken as hell. 2 offhand attacks, 2 regular attacks, and then your dread ambusher attack during the first round of combat. Dual wield hand crossbows and get sharpshooter and you become a god of death
I’m running a Paladin/Bard, and it’s a ton of fun.
He’s got buffs, is a mini tank, and I can bust out my lute at a moments notice.
If it hasn’t been broken by a goblin.
If it hasn’t been broken by a goblin.
Stop using your lute during smite.
Okay but flavor-wise that’s actually awesome. Oath of Devotion to Jimi Hendrix.
Which lvl split did you go with, 7/5 or 2/10?
2/10 I get the smiting and the heavy armor. The rest is Aloha from Hawaii Elvis
I do sorcerer/ranger. No, I don’t know what I’m doing. I just wanted dragon scales in my face. This is my first CRPG experience.

yeah except some bethesda mess in higher difficulties where if you don’t go with the OP build you are tickling the enemies with fireballs

wow i am so extremely surprised not to see Monk on the list at all as a mainclass. Its such a crazy strong class, dont understand why nobody plays it.
Might be because anyone coming from 5e has probably been disappointed with monk before.
I’ll miss my druid and probably regret it once I run into a problem I can no longer solve by being a giant spider about it, but monk is the class I’m itching to play next. I keep running across armor i would have had so much fun using.
I suppose I could just make Karlach a monk, but that would require forethought on my part and I don’t always have her with me, to be able to properly enjoy it
I like playing monk because it’s a very economic class, you don’t need to equip anything to be effective.
Should I be multiclassing Astarion?
It depends what you are going for. Skill Monkey, maybe not as Reliable Talent is quite good.
But if you are looking to maximize combat effectiveness you will need 5-6 lvls in another martial/Gish class since Rogue is the only martial that doesn’t get extra attack.
The reason you are seeing Rogue on this list so much though is that it’s kinda amazing for multiclassing. It’s first 4 lvls are incredibly feature rich in ways that are good for basically every martial class and some caster builds.
Cunning Action is a hell of a drug. I have to consciously stop myself from dipping Rogue 2 in my irl tabletop games too, bonus action dash or disengage is literally game changing. It redefines everything you can do within a turn.
Thanks to Withers and saves, you can fuck around and find out what suits your play the best!
Edit/sidenote: I’m never gonna finish this game 🙃
If you’re finding that he’s doing fine in combat, then don’t worry about it. If you want him to do more, then multiclassing can improve that if you know what you want from the multiclass combo.
If you want, Rogue 3 / Ranger 5 is pretty nice.
What, no spore monk?
The main issue with Spore is that it’s a conditional damage increase that is dependent on Temp HP. This makes it reliant on player knowledge of 5e’s Temp HP mechanics and sources.
Compare that with Fighter and Thief multis and you see why it isn’t taken by those without in-depth knowlege of 5e and BG3’s implementation.
That and the whole Action to activate symbiotic entity, which is true to 5e, but was a bad decision there too.
I did 12 monk originally, but just swapped to 9 monk 3 rogue since it’s basically the same thing just losing like a single feat. But I gain an extra bonus action and some other nice passives instead.
Sad that BarBearians didn’t make the cut.
Is there much of a fundamental difference between which class you start you multiclass on? Or is the Ranger-Rogue vs Rogue-Ranger disparity solely about point allocation?
I think it changes your skill proficiency choices?
Yeah i think thats right. If i went level 1 barb, then a level in fighter, then i wouldnt get heavy armor profiency, but reversed i would. (Just an example, not sure why a barb would really want heavy armor prof as it prevents rage bonuses i think)
Saves, starting skill proficiencies, and weapon/armor proficiencies in most cases. Some classes get those as special features though, such as heavy armor and martial weapons for war clerics, which complicates the rule.
I cant wait to join this group after I’m finished with the campaign. It’s been hard to find time to finish it and not being able to watch any videos or read literally anything about the game is driving me crazy at this point. I haven’t had this much enjoyment playing a game in a long time. What a masterpiece it’s been.
That’s the exact reason my friends and I decided we’d all do an initial run through solo before doing a group campaign. It took us years to finish DOS2, I imagine BG3 will be similar.
The pinned discussion points are spoiler free FYI
Warlock/Cleric or nothing <3
I am surprised there’s no warlock bard.
I’m going for a bard/warlock and right now i’m doing pretty fine. Though i’m still only in act 1.
Actually surprised not to dind more bard multiclass.
