Whether it be in terms of whether they didn’t play as well as you expected them to be, or if they were injured/unfit all the time during their career at your club or perhaps got on bad terms quickly into their career at your club (e.g. Di Maria at Man Utd).
As a Liverpool fan, I can think of names like Aquilani, Robbie Keane, Morientes, Andy Carroll, Kewell, Litmanen, Nuri Sahin etc.
But the one that has to take the cake is Naby Keita. I was very excited when it was announced he would be joining us. He was like the 2nd best midfielder in the Bundesliga that season for Leipzig in the data and for a couple of seasons had shown a lot of great technical ability. He joins us and the rest is history. It’s not to say he didn’t have good moments with us when he had a run of games in the first team. But that was presicely the issue, getting a run of games. It was a constant cycle of spending over half his time injured and when returning, not always having his best games due to slowly returning to fitness and when he did start showing his sparkle he’d go off injured again for a while. I am not just gutted for us but gutted for him too in how it could’ve and should’ve turned out.
Gervinho. He was supposed to be Hazard B as he was integral to that Lille side. Instead, we got possibly the most embarrassing miss of all time against Bradford was it?
Philip Coutinho for Villa was a dreadful experiment
Ings
For?
Hammers. Not that I anticipated he was going to light up the prem or anything but still. Major disappointment
I don’t like the players like him, who go to different clubs of the same league in every couple of years. Those guys are mercenaries, never the hearts of the teams.
Nicolas Pepe
As a Liverpool fan I was so gutted he went to Arsenal after being well linked with us. I still remember he may have been the first player after a couple of years to dribble past VVD? And then just nothing, all sizzle no steak.
This one stung. He had some real high moments and felt like he tried. No big character flaw our coach fallout, just wasn’t good enough
Doku is what pepe was meant to be
Really should have gone for Zaha instead of going for the “cheaper” option.
Emery wanted a right footer to play on the left. So Raul sanelli , our beloved head of football. went and got a left footer who plays on the right (and a massive envelope under the desk from someone i would guess for the money that was exchanged)
Emery also wanted nzonzi in midfield but got given torreira again by Raul… where is Raul now by the way?
The annoying thing is, looking at some of the goals he scored for us, the talent was in there. A bit like Gervinho. Both capable of the sublime but far more likely to produce the ridiculous
I’m still excited for Lo Celso to play the way he does for Argentina. I’m still sure it’s going to happen any day now…
He’s only scored 20 goals in his whole club career right? Mad.
Yes! I’d be fine if he even contributed to goals but he seems a little lost currently
Lo Celso does sound similar to Dos Santos…
Probably Havertz, although he has slowly shown improvement with each game. Seems to be a confidence issue mostly, he plays timidly like he really doesn’t want to mess up or is overly cautious. He has some great moments and some bad moments, but his overall performance has been just meh/mid/okay/whatever you want to call this
He hasn’t been good but it’s harsh to put him on the list when we’re only 1/3 into the season
He hasn’t been bad at all. People just badly wanna banter him off.
Yeah he works hard and he’s improving each game. People wrote him off before he arrived and it’ll be hard to win them over because most of them aren’t reasonable people.
Yeah plus he was seen as the Xhaka “replacement” and people conveniently forget Xhaka had an absolute anomaly of a season attacking wise last year.
Pepe, Willian, Mustafi, Cedric
Wait you were actually hyped about Cedric?
I was not. However he gets an honorable mention for failing to meet even my lowered expectations.
Jokanovic was supposed to be one of the greatest players in the world
they loved him on Ramsey Street though…
Thiago for me ,on his day he’s top five in Europe just can’t put any sort of run together, much like keita far too fragile for the premier league, probably one of the best I’ve seen live.
My first thought was Thiago. One of the best to ever play for us in terms of outright ability. But made of glass.
Keita just has no heart
difference is that Thiago actually plays well when he’s on the pitch
He’s been very frustrating lately given that he cannot play more than 2 games without getting injured but in that 21/22 season he put some crazy good performances in. Keita was the real flop given the hype around him. We paid over 50m for him and he’d have one good game a season before getting a long term injury.
It’s sad how the times have changed opinions on Thiago for issues we were well aware of when we bought him. When he scored THAT screamer I thought he’d be the first name on the sheet for games to come. Was an unplayable force at times but it’s turned into a bit of a “Sturridge” for me. I hope we move him on in Jan so we can cling to the happy memories more because I reckon he’s one of the soundest fellas we have at the club. I really want to look back at him the same way I do for people like Mascherano, Alonso, Mo Sissoko and Arbeloa from that period
I still think if Thiago was fully fit in the final against Madrid, we would’ve won
Havertz at Arsenal
Wait what?! You mean you mention all thise hopefuls and never mentioned Sean Dundee?!?
Nuno Gomes, Michel Salgado, Danny Murphy, Dixon Etuhu, Peter Whittingham
Ndombele. I was so pumped after watching his highlight videos, so silky and able to get through a press so well. What a disappointment.
Tanguy Ndombele. So much talent with a terrible work rate.
Ángel Di María
