PieFed Meta@piefed.social•What fedi accounts are you following?English
2·7 days ago@bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy (opens up following bsky accounts. With the new feature it works now
I’m just seeing this now, and this is awesome news! I’m trying to follow the account to get this working. Do I need to use a mastodon account as some sort of intermediary, or can I get this working directly with my PieFed account?
Edit: Looks like I probably had my PieFed DM settings a bit too restrictive which might be interfering with the process of getting this working. Trying this again.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What can Lemmy instance owners see about you?English
2·18 days agoIt’s worth pointing out that, while Lemmy doesn’t make it easy to see another user’s votes, those votes are still public for anyone to see.
I’m also not so sure that any DMs sent from one instance to another are private.

Gaming@beehaw.org•PlayStation 5 Bounty for Alternate OS installationEnglish
4·20 days agoIf you’re worried about credibility, the founder is Louis Rossman who’s famous for the right to repair movement.
Here’s a quick 2 minute video of him explaining the Fulu Foundation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNkIBece8oc
TL/DW: The bounty winners have to prove that their solution works, but they are not required to release the code to the public because, in the U.S., they can be put in prison for 3-5 years for releasing that code publicly.
The point of all this is to be able to demonstrate to legislators that the DMCA needs to be fixed. They are lobbying to protect our digital rights.

Games@lemmy.world•Former Valve writer says PlayStation killing physical discs is no conspiracy: "You, the consumer, have made your choice, and the choice is for digital"English
31·22 days agotransfer them over to the internal drive, and they work. Even without internet.
That might work for some games, but there’s an increasing number of games requiring you to establish some sort of connection to the internet even for single player or mostly single player games (Lego Horizon for instance).
Try to transfer one of those and load it up on a new console without an internet connection.
Sure, your “home console” might work for some games for now. But in 10-15 years when Sony is trying to sell you the PS8, they’re going to be cutting off service to the PS5. What happens when you have to take that device in for maintenance and they need to do a factory reset? You need to log in again to activate it, except now it’s a brick that might only be able to play a few games on physical media. Anything downloaded/backed up would likely require that specific account.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Does Anyone Else Skip Processing Vulkan Shaders?English
5·28 days agoDefinitely depends on the game. For something like StarCitizen, there’s a small bar at the bottom when shaders are compiling for letting you know the status. There is a noticeable improvement in game performance once the shaders have completed compiling.

41·1 month agoCan’t take that away from me.
Well, if it was taken away, it wouldn’t be the first time that a lifetime pass was pulled from all customers:
Or the second, or the third, or the fourth… https://dev.to/productimpossible/lifetime-subscriptions-dont-mean-what-you-think-they-mean-1hg7
But, at least Plex has honored their lifetime pass for now. That’s a good deal you got there.

2·1 month agoThe condition doesn’t appear in some countries, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t eventually expand it:
Notably, the clause is conspicuously absent from terms governing Mexico, the United States, and several other regions, meaning players there are not currently subject to the policy. By contrast, the provision has been enforceable in the United Kingdom and various European countries for years, though it largely escaped public notice until the recent physical-format debate brought renewed scrutiny to Sony’s digital practices.

PieFed Meta@piefed.social•Still a long way to go on the Mastodon integration frontEnglish
2·1 month agoI would love to see a little more support for cross-posting. So far I can work around this a bit by using a 3rd party app which results in a cross-post like this: https://piefed.social/c/starcitizen@lemmy.world/p/2187210/pegasus-class-escort-carrier
But it would be great to be able to cross-post natively. There’s a decent amount of content that we can pull in to communities to help bolster activity.
I do like the way you’ve handled the integration where the title is blank. I think it’s better than the mbin/kbin method where the title is a duplication of the entire post.

Games@lemmy.world•Poll: Will you buy GTA 6 when it launches on your platform? (Update: VPNs unblocked now!)English
2·1 month agoI’m in the same boat, I’ve played all of the older GTAs, but I never played GTA5. I even got the game for free from Epic… Maybe I’ll try it out eventually.
I’m not very interested in buying GTA6, but I’ll probably check out some gameplay/highlight videos to see if there’s any new/interesting tech in it.

Technology@lemmy.world•Papyrus scroll burnt to a crisp during Vesuvius eruption deciphered with help of AI | CNNEnglish
1·1 month agoThe article never mentioned LLMs. LLMs only make up a small part of all AI tools. The AI in this sense is referring to machine learning models used to help digitally unroll the scroll and then another machine learning model that’s used to detect the letters.

City hall will maintain an X account but only to direct people elsewhere, Abbott said.

The city does not plan at this time to communicate on alternate platforms that have been established as alternatives to X.

Just a heads up to anyone near totality. Being at 99.9% totality does not give you any amazing views at all. You have to be at 100% and ideally deeper in the path so that you get at least a minute of totality.
It’s definitely an amazing experience, but do not make the mistake that many will make just because they see that their home is “right on the edge” (I’m looking at you, Madrid).
