To your second point you might find some explanations in film studies. The rise of viscerally violent zombie/horror movies of the 2000s has been widely discussed. Its typically attributed to: political instability (911/war on terror); fear of diseases (2002 SARS/1999 west nile virus); natural disasters (Huricane Katrina 2005/climate change); and economic crisis (dotcom bubble 2000/2007 economic recession). Essentially widespread fears and anxieties shape our media and I think (some) video games being darker, grittier, and more violent in that time period reflect this.

5·5 days agoNo ai ddg has been a decent general search engine, but if I can’t find something I’ll us marginalia, mojeek, alltheinternet, and even yandex (if I’m desperate). For your research: InstallGentoo Wiki has a fairly comprehensive list of search engines albeit not the most up to date; Seirdy has a blog post reviewing many search engines including some more niche ones; and The Search Engine Map illustrates which engines use what index.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How often are your windows open? What about during Winter? or during Summer? Do you open windows to let in fresh air?English
2·10 days agoHow old is stoßlüften? I know people that are always opening windows and telling their kids to go outside to “blow the stink off” and while they have german ancestry it would be from over a hundred years ago.
I’m pretty sure that lump is a tick, poor guy.

6·27 days agoYahoo uses the bing index, and aside from Google, Bing, and Yandex the only other larger english general search engine with its own index is Mojeek. Seirdy’s blog has more info on this along with reviews of more niche engines, and there is also the search engine map if you want something more visual.

You just reinvented the midwestern “uff da”. It sounds almost the same and can be used the same way.
