  • Nice post!

Fan-made big box with a Civvie quote on the back… that’s the dream as an aspiring boomer shooter dev!

I’ve been playing Nine Sols on Steam Deck this week… getting my arse kicked and it’s making me kinda sad. I used to love difficult reflex challenge games like the From Software games, etc. But last year I was destroyed by a mystery virus and it did something to my brain. I’ve been feeling a lot better for the last few months and thought maybe I’ve finally recovered enough to play some hard games so I grabbed Nine Sols and yeah, I’m not quite there. But it seems like a really cool game! Urgh!

I’ve also been playing Medal of Honor Allied Assault which I grabbed in the GOG sale. Playing through on hard has been a blast (except the snipers, fuck those guys), and the early 2000s aesthetics are really nice… didn’t realise how much I missed this style as I usually go for 90s games when I’m feeling retro.

  • Red chilli and bean soup!

    • 1 red capsicum
    • 1 medium onion
    • 1 celery stick
    • 1 medium carrot
    • 1 clove garlic
    • 2 tbsp olive oil
    • 1/2 tsp chilli powder
    • 400g can tomatoes
    • 2 tbsp tomato puree
    • 700ml vegetable stock
    • 1 can mixed beans
    • 25g kale leaves, shredded
    1. Chop capsicum, celery, carrot, and onion. Crush garlic.
    2. Heat oil in large pan, add chopped vegetables, saute for 5 minutes but don’t colour the vegetables.
    3. Add chilli powder and cook for a minute.
    4. Blend the tomatoes and add to the pan with puree and stock. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes.
    5. Drain and rinse the beans, stir into the soup with kale. Cook for a few minutes until the beans have warmed and the kale wilted.
    6. Season with pepper and serve.

Love this soup! Usually swap the kale for spinach though.

  • I’ve had 2 sleep paralysis episodes in my life and both of them were themed around The Grudge. I’ve never really been scared by horror movies before or since I saw that at the cinema as a teenager, but for some reason that movie rocked me. It also started my lifelong obsession with Ju-On (though I have never rewatched The Grudge) and Asian horror in general.

Kayako is the ultimate ghost villain; once you are cursed, you are fucked. There is no protection ritual, no solving of unfinished business, no escaping a haunted location. She can get to you anywhere, any time of day. She can distort reality to trap you and even time travel. I have goosebumps while writing this comment!

  • No haven’t seen GBOperator before… that’s really cool! Perhaps a bit redundant for LSDj but very cool for gaming.

I like this whole idea of hardware attachments for the Steamdeck. Hopefully Valve will add some sort of standardised mounting points on future iterations so we don’t have to rely on flimsy printed clip-on bits so much… I reckon a VESA mount could be good!

  • Nice post!

I’ve been messing around with a “headless” Dirtywave M8 on my Steamdeck… best bit of money I’ve spent in a long time. Even had a buddy print me a Gameboy cartridge case for it with a clip-on cartridge slot for the deck. Did my first ever jungle noodlings with the Amen break… having a great time!

I’ve actually got a trio of DMG-01s that I grabbed in Japan a few years back… slapped in some RCA and backlight mods in and then quickly lost interest because my eyes just aren’t good enough to deal with those screens. I thought LSDj and the crusty old Gameboy sound chips were really freaking cool… but I’m happy to say the M8 blows LSDj out of the water on features and QoL, and I can stare at my Steamdeck screen all night!
