  • Moved from Italy to Germany at 43, to try and escape the rising fascism. I failed at that, unfortunately. The biggest problem by far is that making friends is much harder than when you’re 20, and even when you manage to, you still have to juggle a million other things so you still end up with a, let’s say, limited social calendar. Second biggest problem is the social safety net in general - getting a baby sitter or somebody to drive you to the doctor or help you carry home that new IKEA thingamabob requires a lot more planning than when you’re in the same city as your family and friends. Everything else is generally manageable (give or take the off culture shock). I’d do it again, anyway.

    Which is why Pratchett is the most feminist author outside feminist academia. His strong female protagonists are actually strong and definitely protagonists and absolutely woman-like - you’ll find very little, if any, “man in power” behavior there, and when there’s something there’s always a good reason.
