All I can do is offer sympathy. I’m in tech and a lot of people got laid off in this last year: just over 250,000. I’m one of them. I learned the hard way when I was laid this time to always negotiate for an exit clause.
I would chat with a couple of labor attorneys to see if there is anything you can do to get some assistance with either finding something new where you are or to, at least, not have to shell out a few more thousand to move back to the USA.
It’s a challenge. I moved back over a decade ago, and I still feel like I’m readjusting. Not so much now, but maybe five or so years in, I was still adjusting a lot to being back.
I agree, but you should probably be specific to “some Americans” because I knew before I moved abroad that things were messed up. I do agree that we have a huge problem with exceptionalism.
When I lived abroad, I didn’t miss the screwed-up healthcare situation. It affects me directly because I have an auto-immune disorder. It was so nice living in a country where I didn’t need to go broke taking care of myself.
I’ve been back in the States now for a few years, and I’m still just floored that we accept this as okay.
I know people who have. I was there for over 8 years, and eventually, it was time to move back home.
If that’s what you want, do it. It’s definitely possible.
I lived abroad in NE Asia in a country that has socialized medicine. I was working there, so I was on their plan. It was great. I was paying into their system obviously.
Even when I stopped working and went back to school there to get a second graduate degree, it was affordable even without being on that main system. I got the care that I needed and had access to affordable medication, including insulin.
