Streets were used by horse/ox driven carts/carriages for thousands of years and long before cars.

Not at anywhere near the speeds or volume that they’re used by cars today. Streets used to be legitimate and safe places where kids could play or people could walk. Cars changed all of that.

Modern cities that are actually well designed focus on making streets destinations - places where people would actually want to exist outside of a car. Streets like this are generally better the fewer cars they have

In the absence of clear demands and organization (which would make it a boycott, which is something that works), “voting with your wallet” just looks like random noise to them. You really think because you stop buying a product or go to the grocery store across the street instead anything will change?

Automated car makers are always going to emphasize the stopping distance because it’s a strong point for them. This was true even in that cruise incident where the car stopped quickly to avoid hitting that woman as hard, but then picked up speed again since it couldn’t see her, dragging her underneath and killing her.

I guess what I would want to know in this case is would a vigilent human driver have spotted the kid faster because a human actually knows how to read body language and spot unpredictable children?

You can’t really claim this without head to head trials comparing antidepressants with vitamin supplementation. There are too many variables that could differ between studies for it to be meaningful. The author also neglected to mention that the largest trial to date (VITAL-DEP) showed no difference over 5.3 years in depression with 2000 IU/day vitamin D supppementation. So while there may be something to this, more research is definitely needed.

I will put in a plug for iron deficiency as a contributor to depression though, which has much stronger evidence behind it. The medical community is just starting to come to grips with just how common it is, particularly in younger women.

Sometimes antidepressants can unmask bipolar disorder and cause manic episodes but I’ve never heard of anything similar with antipsychotics. In fact they’re often used as sedatives as OP alluded to.

The car argument is relevant because OK, you take a train from NYC to Seattle or some shit. It goes across thousands of miles. If you were to stop at a station to visit a relative along the way, you could get off the train and still be 3-5+ hours by car travel to that relative who lives in podunkville population 100.

We have an enormous amount of land that has very, very low population density. There are huge swathes that also practically have no to minimal population living there permanently.

I’m confused. Is your argument that mass public transit isn’t realistic for students traveling to unis because a tiny % of the population lives in the middle of nowhere where it wouldn’t be feasible to access by rail alone? Places where there universities do not even exist? There are towns of less than 10K people in the US that used to be serviced by rail back when they were even smaller than that (and some that still are). Look up a picture of the US freight rail map. Even without the insane subsidies that cars receive, the most extensive freight rail network in the world has been built in the US.

To your other point, I agree that the political will for public transit is not strong enough. I think that’s a poor excuse to advocate for more car parking which will only make the situation worse.

The US was built on rail. Almost every US city only exists because it used to be on a rail line. Most US cities used to have tram networks that were ripped out and paved over to make way for cars. LA, despite now being a sprawling car centric wasteland used to have the biggest tram network in the country. Rail is also just a far better solution to travelling vast distances than cars for many reasons, so I really don’t understand why that argument comes up again and again. Who the fuck wants to drive from New York to California? I don’t.

The reason for the dominance of cars in the US has way more to do with the power of the auto industry and the lack of political will than any real practical concerns.

When you don’t support any kind of parking you also make it difficult for people who have full time jobs or are continuing education as adults.

When you support more parking you ironically only make this problem even worse. Look up “induced demand.” Not to mention increased tuition (avg cost of garages is in the tens of thousands per spot) and butt ugly campuses filled with parking garages.

The real solution is more alternatives to driving so that only the people who actually have to drive do.

Generally speaking people who need mental health help are going to be more easily discouraged by a negative interaction than the general population even if they can afford therapy in the first place. In the US at least there’s also a shortage of therapists, meaning you might have to wait a long time to see anyone at all. And in my experience there are a lot more bad therapists than good ones (though assholes of this level are probably rare).

Honestly if it were me I’d just save myself the trouble, read a book on CBT and get some antidepressants. But that doesn’t work for everyone.

porting the google number requires a phone plan w carrier; but i only use prepaid accounts between multiple carriers that change roughly every 6 to 12 months or so, depending on the price and whether or not they’ll support the unlock phones that i buy online. also: my current carrier will not accept a google voice number per their technical support people.
