KDE devs: “What is VNC?”
Huh? Isn’t VNC already working using
krfb
?
They are even working on implementing explicit sync in Plasma 6: https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/4693
There is a lot of things needed to make it happen, but maybe we’ll have Wayland recommended as default for NVidia users too.
That depends alot on Nvidia, always has.
NVidia did submitted a PR for XWayland: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/-/merge_requests/967
But this protocol isn’t only for NVidia. It will help reduce the CPU overhead of implicit sync. There is a Mesa PR for it as well: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/merge_requests/25709
Won’t be using Wayland anyway, breaks too much of what I use. Will stick to X11.
You won’t have a choice, likely X11 will be EOL’d some time in 2024. Sure you could keep using Plasma 5.x for sometime past the EOL of X11, but eventually, if you want to upgrade your system, you’ll have to switch to Wayland.

Will switch to Windows then.
That seems extreme. In most cases, if you’re using Ubuntu, Debian that defaults to Gnome on Wayland, you more than likely won’t notice a difference. KDE is almost there, but not quite, just a few showstoppers left as far as I’m aware.
…Ok?
Debian 12 will be well supported well past 2024…
Anything past Debian 10 uses Wayland by default, and just because the OS is supported, doesn’t mean all the software it’s built on is as well.
Debian 11 uses X11 as default if you uses KDE. And it is still super is super easy to change from Wayland to X11 in KDE IN Debian 12.
X11 might be abandoned at this point in time. But it still works well. Wayland still don’t work as well as X11 so I will be using X11 for the next few years.
I plan to test Waland in Debian 13 that will be released in 2025. If Wayland is still broke then I will continue using X11. I don’t think X11 will be going anywhere anytime soon since Wayland has so many issues
It’s okay if you want to stick to x, Linux is all about choices. …
But may come the day where you will need to compile and run x11 by yourself.
And don’t know which gpu you have but remember that wayland as of today is totally fine on amd and intel gpus.
Especially with amd + plasma.
I have an Nvidia GPU.
I know that don’t need to recompile x11 for the next 2 years since I am currently gaming on Debian stable. The next version should arrive in 2025.
There has been no talk about removing X11 yet (as far as I am aware). So I will expect that I can run X11 without issues unto 2027. I hope that Wayland would run smoothly by then.
It has been taken way to long to get Wayland to run on pair with X11 if you ask me.
On nvidia gpu… The problem is all there.
Nvidia isn’t putting much effort on wayland and they decided to implement teir own propietary implementation of the driver.
I have an amd desktop pc and i can assure that wayland runs like a breeze.
Fast, smooth, and working VRR with plasma :)

Wayland by default? No thank you. Its not ready and the existing applications isn’t ready either. KDE should just let the users decide instead of forcing Wayland upon us. If Brodie’s video has truth in it then please do not make Wayland the default. Brodie’s video ==> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDB8oq6uGgA
Not good news for gamers, Until steam and wine/proton catch up by adding Wayland native there is a performance hit that is xwayland
This myth of the Xwayland performance hit needs to die already. Yes, in windowed mode X11 has some overhead because it does an unnecessary additional copy, but that’s exactly the same as on Xorg. In fullscreen though, Xwayland on average has better performance than Xorg.
Thats the biggest problem, On paper it has better performance but in reality it doesn’t! See my post here https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/17ipxp6/dota_2_x11_vs_xwayland_weird_results/
