Scientists have used AI to design functional viruses that target bacteria – a first for the technology, and one that is already raising alarm over biosecurity.
Why. The hell. Is this even being considered, let alone put into practice? This could cause the next pandemic ffs
Language-Modle based -> virus design -> human cultivation. There is a part that I cannot understand, namely that it is a fraudulent announcement. It means they created a base-pair order sequence! This cannot be done by AI on its own. The fact that it was created by oneself without human involvement is very likely to be 100% false. The reason is simple. If even one base pairing is incorrect, it can become just bacteria, not bacteriophage. Or it could mean becoming nothing more than garbage. It means that if you fail to create a mutation, it may end up with a result that is simply nothing. Did AI do this all on its own, acting unilaterally? There is a very high possibility that it is false. Maybe OpenAI funded the research…
Let’s think about this. Although the news is clarifying it properly, if you do not understand its meaning, you may conclude that the AI designed it on its own. I will tell you the basis for it. The field of E. coli research has already established tremendous progress and a systematic academic foundation. AI used the already established model called 'ΦX174." This is not a model created by AI on its own, but one created by a Human. And AI designed it based on that, and a person chose the model among them with the highest “potential.” How can one determine whether the likelihood is low or high? Because a Human already know. And out of about 300, 16 are said to have succeeded. During this experiment, what AI did was act as a calculator.
Well, as you and I both know full well, AI never made anything of its own — it’s all just regurgitated trash. So no, I never for once believed AI did this entirely of its own volition. I understand what you’re saying, but a tool like this in the hand of the wrong person can still spell catastrophe. It’s like the difference between giving a chainsaw to a lumberjack, and giving one to Leatherface. There will inevitably always be a human element, so please don’t think I’m misinterpreting what this article is saying. And yes, not many ‘creations’ succeeded, but that doesn’t mean for one second that one day they won’t all succeed. And nothing guarantees it will be safe.
I trust you, and at the same time, I respect you. I do not conclude that you do not know. I decided that I hoped many people could properly understand this news. I wrote the text for them. I think true fear comes from the perspective of assuming that the development of [real artificial intelligence] has already taken place. I think the current fear is a process of brainwashing the world by deceiving people into believing this fake is the real thing.

I hate it when they churn out fake news gah!
This kind of research is really low-probability, and the very fact that it showed a success rate of about 5% is fake news.
Let’s hope so

Oh, ok. Fair point.
