Yes, I know McMurphy did some pretty bad stuff (like he got charged for statutory rape, FFS because a 15 year old girl said she was of age) but I feel strongly connected to him besides that whole thing in a way, and I have no idea why…

One of my favorites. And I will actually die on the hill that says that Nurse Ratched isn’t the villain and McMurphy isn’t the hero. Both simply represent the two sides of Billy Bibbit’s freudian super-ego. Two authority figures representing order and chaos respectively.

Neither chaos nor order are evil in a traditional sense of the word. Both just have roles to play that are completely hostile to one another and both are contributing to Billy’s sense of his own self and his struggles in that regard.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but if I remember correctly my take away was that the real crazy people are those that take pride in upholding societal norms that are unsustainable and hurt others. There is a lot of symbolism, too. The Native American character in particular carries a lot of weight.

The book is so powerful. (I’ve never seen the movie.)

My favorite part is the foreshadowing of McMurphy’s tattoos: He’s got the Aces & Eights, the poker hand Wild Bill Hickock was holding when he was killed, since know as the “dead man’s hand”.

Great movie, and even greater acting. Nurse Ratchet is the ultimate villain.

And I learned embarrassingly recently that Danny DeVito is plays that grinning patient who always looks at other people’s cards.

Louise Fletcher portrayed an equally evil villain on Deep Space Nine several years later! Excellent actress.

The movie triggers my PTSD from the time I went in to get treatment for major depression

So, it must be pretty good to be able to do that

I Read the book first. We don’t see much of the main character’s mental episodes other than the nightmare scene in the movie.
