Quite honestly I can’t stand only a few books that I’ve read, recently The Awakening by Nora Roberts.

Holy crap, do I reallllyyyyy want my money back. I was bored. So. Bored. The magic system was subpar, the characters just….ew, everything was so, so boring. The MC is an idiot.

What book is a zero star read for you?

read the whole thing in HS - holy crap was it terrible. I read it because a young woman I liked a lot spoke highly of Ayn Rand - first read Anthem and found it bearable, but Atlas Shrugged? I want my life/time back.
Also never got the girl, lol.

It’s actually a very entertaining book if you don’t take it seriously.

I bought the book in a secondhand bookstore because i like collecting big beefy books. Read the reviews. Still hidden on some shelf somewhere.

I read it when I was in college, and got kind of engrossed in the storyline of the book. So, when I hit the monologue, I got annoyed with it, found where it ended, and skipped the whole thing. Looking back, I laugh, because that was essentially the message of the book. I wasn’t going to sit there and read 60 pages of sanctimonious blathering. So I essentially skipped the presentation of the main point.

Right? Like, having your characters just come out and explicitly state what that they are feeling, thinking and the literal message and theme of the book is bad writing even at the best of times, but to do it for 60 PAGES? Even if you agree with Rand’s morally bankrupt “philosophy” I cannot fathom why anybody likes this as a book.

I’ve read thousands of books, and this is the only one that was so awful I couldn’t finish it. It wasn’t even the ideas - hell, I have read mein Kampf and the fucking phone book. It was so poorly written is was unbearable.

My second worst would be Kushiel’s Dart. Absolute garbage.

Rand should have just saved the time she spent writing novels and just made a poorly xeroxed manifesto and stood on a street corner like a normal loon since all her novels are nothing but poorly disguised polemic.

Tried this about 10 years ago.

Read (more like suffered through) 70% and found myself just flipping pages skipping stuff just to get through it.

One of the first books I ever quit.
