I have seen so many posts of people shitting on popular books so I need to hear some of your favourite ones.
For me I believe that the A Good Girls Guide To Murder series is amazing and deserves all the love in the world
It has a incredible plot with so many fun and well written characters that I found quite relatable, the entire series is just fantastic and is one of my all time favourite mystery series
The Farseer Trilogy is as good as people say it is. I won’t say too much more because you should just read it.
So is the Black Company, although it’s only about 75% as gritty and tripy as it’s rep.
The First Law Trilogy is great, wonderful character development, but the ending will make you want to spit fire and chew nails.
The Dresden Files are fun and sometimes hilarious. Dresden is a pulp noir hero by design, though, which has gotten some flak recently. YMMV but I don’t know what folks were expecting from a book that screams it’s love for that old genre from the rooftops.
Yes, Black Company. For those wanting to scratch that itch, Malazan book of the fallen.
I couldn’t get into Malazan cause it felt like Black Company but with massive amounts of more distance to the characters.
First law trilogy, whooo! Fuckin bayaz. And fuck most of the rest of what happened. But fuckin bayaz, man
As somone who has read all 10 First Law books, let me assure you it gets better for our heroes… Also much worse.
Dresden would be more forgivable if fans did not constantly say there are no issues. Most series have issues. The fact that fans claim all issues are fixed after book 4 is wrong. The most honest answer is Dresden is Dresden if he bugs you bail. If the writing bugs you it does get a bit better.
Weird none of the people I know who like Dresden think there are no issues. We’ve got a running inside joke that Harry would suddenly stop in the middle of a big bad fight to explain how his magic interferes with electricity and his car an old blue Volkswagen known as the blue beetle. Full agreement that Dresden is a Mary Sue author insert (with the usually accompaniment of undue attention from any woman he encounters) and that the big climax felt less climactic than most of the individual books.
It’s just really fun (from when the writing becomes bearable) despite the many issues.
The Realm of the Elderlings deserves all of the love. I say that despite the story ripping my heart out, shredding it, and putting it back together. Several times.
Everyone who loves The Realm of the Elderlings will always get a big virtual hug from me. Not just because we share a common interest, but mostly because you must also be damaged somehow and we both need this.
Well, I wasn’t damaged before reading it.
Sell me on the Far Seer trilogy. All my friends love Robin Hobb and have recommended her and I read a ton of fantasy (it’s the main genre that I love) so it should be right in my wheelhouse. Despite that, I read Assassin’s Apprentice and it didn’t really hit for me and, subsequently, the second book continues to slip behind other books on my TBR.
Sell yourself.
Don’t think anyone should have to “sell” you on it. If you don’t want to continue, don’t continue. If you want to figure out whether or not you should continue perhaps provide more info on why you didn’t like it. Was it because Fitz’s pov was a child’s pov? If so, the series spans nearly his entire life. Did you find it too slow? If so, it might not be a good fit for you. Did you find Fitz annoying? If so, then, again, it might not be a good fit for you, since you need to enjoy being in Fitz’s head to enjoy the series. I’m very much a fan of the series and Fitz is my favourite character, but the series just isn’t a good fit for some readers.
I just realized you meant the Robin Hobb Farseer. I was thinking of Robert J Sawyer’s Farseer / Quintaglio trilogy about talking dinosaurs doing the Galileo Affair, which is also awesome.
