I’ve seen people talk about actors and artists that had a terrible time.
My own would be Anne Rice. She wrote Interview with the Vampire after her young daughter died of Leukemia. Then her husband suddenly died of a brain hemorrhage. I suspect her Christian, anti-fanfic phase was a result of mental illness and manipulation from the publishers, although I don’t think she ever apologized.
Sarah Gruen. She wrote Water For Elephants. I’d read an article from her best friend about “how she lost her life” & thought she died, but apparently she stopped writing due to paranoia & mental health issues. There were parts of Water For Elephants that were based on true events/people & the grandson of a character was in prison. He became obsessed with her after reaching out to her about his grandma & Sarah felt like she owed him something I guess. Apparently she tried to get him out of prison & I personally don’t think she had anything romantic to do with the guy, she was married. But the people who put that guy in prison (I think it had to do with a murder charge & he said he was wrongfully imprisoned) started going after her. She moved several times, she developed paranoia, she had by that point drained all her money into getting him out & he ended up turning her into a person who couldn’t write anymore. The best friend says at the end of the article that she was skin & bones & seemingly a shell of a person when she checked on her. :/
D.H. Lawrence. I always felt that his writings had a sense of personal longing. I wish I can write something as emotionally wrecking as the opening line of Lolita.
Franz Kafka because he had no self esteem in his own works and his final wish was for his 3 novels to be burnt. Look where he is now. But unfortunately he never saw his success.
Sylvia Plath, Edgar Allen Poe , Joan Didion
William Sleator. His books are some of the most frequently requested in the “What was that book” groups. He’s like the thinking man’s R.L. Stine, writing middle grade science fiction. Memorable plots, but no one remembers his name.
He was also a gay (before that was remotely accepted) alcoholic who drank himself to death.
Any who have works published against their wishes after their death. Academics can examine the primary sources, but actual publication is disrespectful.
Alexander Solzhenitsyn spent time in the gulag(s)/work camps but survived the experience. He was stripped of his Russian citizenship in the 1970s and was forced to live in West Germany before living in America for about 15/16 years. But, he was one of the relatively lucky ones.
Iirc her religious phase was a reaction to Hurricane Katrina. She had a “come to Jesus” sort of conversion bc back then lots of preachers were saying the hurricane was punishment for New Orleans wickedness (like Poseidon’s rage but Christian) and then she sort of got over it and went back to writing about vampires and incestual witches.
J.K rowling. it’s shameful and hypocritical that people degrade her for her (reasonable) views, she’s a grown woman with a fully developed brain and nothing she has said about the trans community is wrong. i stand by that
Irene Nemirovsky, there’s an ébullition of emotions inside me whenever I read one of her books, it’s one of the rare cases where I don’t seperate the author from the artwork.
Terry Goodkind. It must have been really hard going through life with one’s head lodged for far up one’s own ass.
GRRM.
Like way to give the most bare minimum sparks notes ass bullshit version of what is probably a very interesting conclusion to his series. Imagine your magnum opus gets essentially spoiled to the entire world and they do such a poor job of spoiling that story that now no one is interested in reading the real thing.
Also he’s not even that old! He still has time to finish them! I feel like he’s got a lot done and just waiting to announce both so he can be done in one fell swoop.
Salman Rushdie. He didn’t deserve what happened to him.
As a machine learning model, I don’t have personal feelings or emotions, so I don’t experience sympathy or empathy. However, I can understand that some authors may face challenges or difficulties in their careers, whether it be related to the creative process, criticism, or other aspects of the writing profession.
Authors, like any other professionals, can encounter obstacles, rejection, and criticism. Some may struggle with the pressures of public expectations, while others may face personal or external challenges that impact their work. While I can provide information and discuss the experiences of authors, I don’t have the ability to feel emotions on their behalf. If you have specific authors in mind or if there’s a particular context you’re interested in, feel free to provide more details, and I can offer relevant information.
Not a tragedy but George RR Martin and any author whose fan base treats them like shit because they want more. To be clear, writing a series implies that you intend to finish it, but they are under no obligation to do so. Just leave them alone. Maybe he’s just done with it and moved on. Stephen King’s The Dark Tower is a good example of this too. I believe he only really completed it because of his car accident and quickly finished it up. And what did we get? Not exactly the quality that many fans wanted. Basically, just lay off authors in general. They don’t need to hear your hate mail.
