Good morning, sorry if this post could be the classic post in which someone doesn’t know whether to switch to Linux for gaming but I’m looking for advice. If I put the wrong flair I apologize and will be ready to correct.
Let me start by saying that I already use Linux on my laptop to study (arch) and I use the Steam Deck with Steam OS and I know some basic commands but obviously I can’t know everything so if I say something wrong I ask you to correct me please.
I have a desktop PC with these specifications:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
GPU: ASUS NVidia GeForce RTX 2070
RAM: 32GB DDR4 3600MHz
NVME: 2tb
Microphone: Wave Link: 1 (A challenge to use on linux)
In the past I also dualbooted this PC with Arch and it worked quite well but the situation was still from a few months ago.
My following doubts for now are these:
-
Screenshare for discord, I prefer to use wayland, sometimes I happen to be on a call with my friends and unfortunately I can’t share some windows and I can’t even share the audio and it’s frustrating, I know they have introduced some solutions but I’m not sure which would work better.
-
My microphone, I remember that I have headphones connected to my microphone and that no one could hear the microphone during the call but I could hear the audio of the entire PC and the others speaking.I think I could solve it by connecting the headphones to the motherboard.
-
Some games absolutely don’t work on Linux and I don’t know how to fix it, from what I know Call Of Duty, Kingdom Hearts and certainly others.
-
I’m afraid of losing too much performance on some games but I think it’s not serious.
I’m sure I’m forgetting some points but I can make an edit if necessary.
Let me start by saying that I have always wanted to switch to Linux but that a friend of mine has already done so and is happy with it and also under his advice I am considering changing, Windows has caused me a lot of problems with updates and licenses.
Thanks in advance and have a nice day.
Screen sharing in discord is a discord issue. It’s been possible for a while and I know there are third party discord apps that do it. Discord just won’t update their office Linux client to do it. It’s a Discord issue, not a Linux issue
I’ve never seen a microphone that won’t work on Linux. You very likely just need to tweak your audio settings. This is a common problem people have with multiple audio input and output options in Windows and Mac OS too.
Like you said, some games wont work and there won’t be anything you can do about it. That is always going to be a reality.
Performan in most games is basically the same between Linux and Windows. I wouldn’t worry about that.

Is it? 100% of TRS and 99.9% of USB mics should just be plug & play. IOW, if your mic doesn’t work it’s more of a “your mic” problem than a “Linux” problem :)

There’s nothing you can do about that. You have the choice of not playing these titles (usually there are more reason not to) or sticking with Windows.
- use vesktop/vencord-desktop, supports wayland screen and audio sharing through pipewire. it’s not an offical client tho so take that as you will
- strange
- true, but most games work
- you won’t lose that much performance (im used to seeing games run faster on AMD at least), except in a select few games like starfield because nvidia can’t write good drivers
It’s been said many times i suppose but i’ll say it again just in case it helps you, but the reason that some games don’t work on Linux is a specific Anti-cheat software they have, so you can’t fix them unfortunately. But yeah it is what it is my dawg
Yesterday I needed to share my game screen with a friend but discord wouldn’t. So I opened obs and used that to emulate a Webcam and piped my video feed the emulated Webcam and used that “Webcam” in discord. It actually worked perfectly and was really easy. I had never done it before, but took like 30 seconds to figure out.
Others have offered nice solutions. The one thing I don’t understand is why Kingdom Hearts wouldn’t work on Linux.
it’s free and no obligation. you don’t even need to lose your windows install.
if it doesn’t work out just wipe it.
ps. try Nobara. it’ll probably yield the least headaches.
90% of games on NVIDIA are pretty close between windows and Linux unfortunately though some like cyberpunk and horizon zero dawn perform significantly worse though.
I keep a dual boot - Linux and windows. Windows has increasingly less disk space and I use it only for specific games. But so far, I got 100% games I tried on Linux working and I have a big library
But I have an amd gpu, I bought it especially for switching OS.
When I change GPU in the future, I also want to take GPU driver support into consideration.
However, I intend to singleboot, but I think that later I will also try to dualboot Windows, allocating the right amount of space for the games I need
