At least in my experience, their conclusion tracks correctly. If both sides of the aisle are so diametrically opposed, to be a moderate is to want nothing to change, which generally means you’re of a demographic that is unaffected by negative policy from either side, which leads to being low information and low engagement in democracy. The moderate is the position of the status quo, and at least in my experience means they will vote against any change in either direction because they don’t want to have to think about things changing, even if it means voting against someone that could help them in the long run.

My personal one

IIRC Pushback against “Unsafe at any speed” was the literal origin of the conservative think tank as a political movement. I think Behind the Bastards did an episode on it or maybe Stuff you missed in history class?

It’s because they’re offering easy answers to complicated problems. No one wants to listen to me explain for 45 minutes why something is an issue that dates back three decades and will probably require three more decades of fixing, they just want to feel good now.

As long as the state stays red, they’ll always have equal say in how our government works. That’s the plan, it’s a slow hostile takeover because representation doesn’t correlate to population. It’s how Wyoming has the same voting power as California, even though California’s GDP is measured on a global scale more accurately than a national scale. The more educated people leave to blue states, the more say red states have in national politics.

The Internet didn’t so much get less racist as it simply got sanitized because they realized that they weren’t extracting maximum dollar from non-white users. The hate simply got pushed further down into the dank miserable depths to fester while the rest of us get to pretend that racism isn’t still a massive problem because black people are a marketing demographic now…
