They don’t know any better.
I thought it was weird that they do this but left in her joke about “Russian sausage”
Thank you!! This bothered me too
Oh I didn’t even think of the fact that. Maybe it’s actually TLC that changed his name from Russian sounding Igor to Justin to distance themselves from Russia and made it a script for Nikki. That would be so stupid. Just use his real name. Citizens of fascist countries are not responsible for their dictators’ war crimes. Literally nobody is going to be offended by referencing Russian language and culture 🙄
The subtitles are often routinely wrong or badly-translated. I think it is mostly approximated computer translations. TLC is infamous for being sloppy cheapasses.
I’ve watched a lot of anime back in the day and the subtitles made me laugh out loud they were so bad. Not all languages translate well.
TLC is using Jihoon’s translator app
No computer would confuse Slavic Russian for Latin Romanian though.
It’s probably the subtitle editor not speaking either, and just googling what language they speak in Moldova (knowing his nationality) which is Romanian.
You can’t google translate your way out of a language like Russian, it’s very context based and has some intense grammar
Subtitle writers make almost no money and have to go through a show really fast. There’s no requirement for any subject matter expertise nor language info provided. Source: I did this, it’s some of that “low paying online job” work that people on here think every foreigner can get. I made maybe $30 a day.
I mean, it’s possible. It’s not easy to travel to and from Russia and USA.
I doubt there’s any conspiracy at work. It’s the result of penny pinching and carelessness. They’re using Google Translate, or some similar program to auto-translate. Some intern, who probably doesn’t speak a word of Romanian or Russian is in charge of the translations. They simply don’t care. They always do this; remember when Nicola was clearly speaking Arabic, yet the translation said it was Hebrew? Just sloppiness
I order captions and subtitles from my job. All foreign language is human translated.
Is your job producing higher or lower quality material than 90DF
They did this when Nicola was speaking Arabic, they said Hebrew
I think I heard him speak both Arabic and Hebrew.
I don’t know if I missed him speaking Hebrew in a scene, but he was definitely speaking Arabic in every scene I watched him in ( I speak Arabic).
The scene where the brother tells Nicolas mom that Meesha has kids was in Hebrew
I studied Hebrew; in some instances he was saying words in modern Hebrew but overwhelmingly he was speaking Arabic. TLC is being super weird or lazy
IMO, TLC is very ignorant. I feel like the producers and everyone else involved in this show is even more ignorant than the cast… the translations are often off, the background music doesn’t correspond to the country, etc.
You do realize 90DF is anti-immigration propaganda? The whole approach is to spread ignorance.
Absolutel. Why do you think they only film in bad areas in other countries? They only show stray animals and outdoor markets, never the big cities, nice shops, nice houses, nice parks. All these countries have middle and upper middle class folks too. But they show the most poor. The message is: América, the rest of the world is shit, so stay here and don’t go abroad.
They want it to seem like every person on the show is a gold-digger because how could they possible live in the hellhole they were born in?? So racist
I don’t know enough Spanish to translate everything, but I know enough to know that the translations aren’t exact. They give the gist I guess.
same with Alexi when speaking Ukranian with his parents, TLC captioned Russian one time then moments later said Hebrew
thank you! I was going to post that yesterday as well. it drives me crazy
So is he russian?
He has a Russian sausage, according to Nikki
He is from Moldova, but speaks Russian most of the time. I think he also speaks Romanian though. He hasn’t said he is Russian so far and generally speaking Moldovans don’t say they are Russian. But to be clear, even if he was Russian, there isn’t anything wrong with that.
It’s unclear. The fact that he speaks Russian doesn’t mean he’s not Moldavian.
“TLC” lmao as if the closed captioner is employed by tlc
The subtitles on the bottom are probably made by TLC but closed captions like up top are done by a service and are very unreliable.
Correct
TLC does not know the difference, and they expect you to be as ignorant.
It’s incompetence, not malice
I think it is more negligence than anything else.
I feel like one time Libby said her father-in-law spoke Romainian and maybe that just figured that was the standard in Moldova.
There have been posts that Andrei says very vulgar things in Russian that don’t get translated. I’m sure that the geographic location of Chisinau creates a dialect which is a little bit of everything, especially with Russia having its eye on the Transnistria area on the eastern side of Moldova. I’m glad Andrei and Elizabeth are on the Pillow Talk episodes to provide a little context.
Yes. I am Romanian and can understand Andrei and his father when they speak Romanian. Moldovans are often bilingual and in Igor’s case he also speaks English.
Andrei also speaks Russian. (Especially some swearwords lol. “Blyat” means “fuck” or something like that)
