Don’t judge my dinner lol. It was a long day and I wanted something quick and easy. Defrosted the chops, got them ready to coat, and, what’s this? No bags? Surely this must be a manufacturing anomaly.

Nope. I go back into the pantry and grab the newer box, open it, and…also no bags.

Had to waste one of the good, gallon-size Ziplocs for this.

How many fractions of a penny did they save (and not pass on to me) by not including the shake bags? Ugh!

I noticed recently that Hot Pockets at some point in the last ~ 8 years removed the crisping sleeve for cooking them in the microwave (I hadn’t bought them in a long time). They claim that it was done to reduce packaging waste. In reality, they just made the product shittier to save a few cents per unit. Now you have to cook it in the oven for 30 minutes to have it be crispy, or have a rubbery hot pocket if you use the microwave. It was the first time I bought them in ~ 8 years, and I won’t be buying them again.

Hilariously there was minor backlash about this, they sent out silicone hot pocket holders as a gesture of goodwill if you requested it.

Haven’t had those in forever but you could probably pop them in the air fryer or even the toaster oven for half that time.

The last time I recall eating a Hot Pocket was in like 2014 during a week-long power outage. Was using a propane heater to not freeze to death and put the hot pockets over top of that on a wire rack. They came out surprisingly good 😆

I think they added an air fryer cook method to the instructions as well. I didn’t want to deal with getting the air fryer out for a freaking hot pocket of all things.

My air fryer never leaves the counter, but it’s also a toaster oven and grill. I can easily cook for the two of us with that and haven’t baked anything in the big oven in months.

The grill plate works great but it’s a PITA to clean up after grilling something that splatters a lot, so I don’t use that much.

They’ll probably say that it’s for the environment and that you should use a reusable bag for it.

Companies are good at doing things to benefit the environment when it also benefits their bottom line.

I’ve lived long enough where I definitely see this as the reason.

It starts with one person saying “hey wait, if we do this thing we waste a little less!”. Good intentions and idea. It grows and catches on. Companies see that and see the triple hitter: they can

      • reduce overhead costs by not doing the wasteful thing
      • go on a PR blitz making it look like they’re doing amazing things, people clapping all the way
      • continue charging the same amount.

Happens all the time. Tipping is the best example. You feel bad for the driver or server so you tip a little more. Companies see this and make it easier for you to tip, saying they really value their workers and want to let you tell them. Meanwhile they do nothing for actual pay, screwing you and the employees at the same time.

I’d take no issue with it, but if it came to fucking over the environment to save cash, well then fuck the environment it is.

Cheapflation them back and learn that you don’t need these stupid products. They’re not “convenient” they’re just a way to charge you 10x for the constituent ingredients.

I’m with this guy. Just buy some seasoning salt or whatever and apply it with some oil. At this point the only advantage they’re giving you is that they’re pre measured portions.

The ingredients of this are going to be white flour, salt, thyme, garlic, paprika.

And probably a bunch of other useless shit you don’t want or need to eat.

So yeah, just mix up a 1/2 cup of flour, dash some seasonings in, mix it up, coat your meat and let it sit for 30 minutes.

cheapflation means they are using cheaper, crappier ingredients for the same price. i think you mean shrinkflation.

cheapflation is very common in toothpaste brands, for example some crest line the og had way less mint and some other ingredients, the new ones have so much mint enough to cause a reaction(oils can irritate the skin).

not good if the plastic chemical is leached from washing and heat and not really sanitary, because plastic often have defects in them which can hide bacteria.

Ikea has reusable silicone ones that are really nice too, and store easier than containers. They have a plastic bar that slides over the zipper to keep it sealed.

Same! I also reuse bread bags and the like. Plastic grocery bags work for most things.

No idea when I last bought kitchen bags, but it’s been at least a decade.

Isn’t it illegal to provide plastic bags in a bunch of states now? I wonder if this is a snowball affect of that.

Those bags contain goods, it’s being an empty plastic bag. The laws are pretty broad, and you wouldn’t want to create an issue, so just go nuclear. Some places it’s not just bags, it’s any single use plastic as well. These are single use plastic, not with a good inside.

The actual seasoning crumbs are still sealed in a bag (for now? lol). It just doesn’t come with the “shake” bags you pour that into in order to coat the food.

I’m guessing those seasoning crumbs are a pretty standard mixture, one that is easily googled, and can be bought for pennies compared to that bag. Some olive oil, that seasoning, and a bug bowl and you could have weeks of it ready to go

Dude, just use a bowl. Like, I get it, fuck corporations and all that. But this seems a little petty to get upset over when my groceries are $150 a week and beef is $10 a pound. Honestly, we shouldn’t even be eating this processed garbage anyway.

2 problems with a mixing bowl, its not as easy and its more work to clean. These where a go to for me for quick easy, and cleanup meals for the family.

the bag had little chance for mess, the bowl is more cleanup and higher chance for mess, maybe its not a “huge” thing but its not nothing and breaks the convenience of them.

Put the porkchops or chicken [$5/lbs] in the bag with the seasoning crumbs [$1] shake, put in air fryer, microwave a some veggies[$1.25] serve on paper plates and I had a low cost, quick, no clean up meal for my family.

Having to use something else adds cost, in money, time or energy, all of which I have nowhere enough of
