Remember that fire can travel underground through plant roots.
I’d recommend digging up the grass in the center and filling in the hole with a layer of sand.
The risks are very tiny with sod. I’ve never seen a grass fire travel underground and as a retired firefighter, I’ve seen and fought a few 1000 acres of grass fires. Nor was it was even mentioned as a possible training scenario. Now it is possible for a forest fire to burn down into the ground because of the roots that trees have.
We’ve had about 40,000 acres of forest fire up here in the Arrow Head region of northern Minnesota this past summer. Only one fire is having issues with underground burning. And there was a lot of fire burden from standing dead trees and dead falls. Which are the cause of the under ground fires. They estimate by January of February this winter the fires will burn out.
The only thing I don’t like about fire rings is needing to mow around them…
Unless I’m misunderstanding, root fire is usually an issue for big vines & tree stumps and the like. Monoculture turf roots like that would probably decompose pretty quickly after the first fire kills the grass (assuming they properly douse the fire)
The grass roots aren’t the issue, Without seeing a 360° view, we don’t know how close the nearest tree is. Some tree roots grow quite a ways to the sides, and can be hiding just under the soil.
For my last house, I dug about 6 inches down, and put a layer of gravel to fill up to the ground level. Pea gravel on bottom 3 inches and larger inch or so gravel on top. Then spaced the bottom ring so there was about 1.5-2in of space for air to flow in.
I also tried covering the inside of the stones I used with leftover high temp cement from making a blacksmithing forge, but it didn’t adhere well to the stone and flaked off after a couple uses. it would probably do better on concrete retaining wall slabs.
I built it to last, for sure. But I wouldn’t say I over-built it.
This kind of ring in OPs pic is probably fine for their purposes, but it’s always good to be aware of things like root fires.

PS: make sure it’s the right type of stone. Don’t want it to spall when you heat it. You could loose an eye.
The fire could loose a shard of stone and then op could lose an eye.

A stone with water in it that gets heated to steam can explode. It may launch shrapnel in all directions if heated enough. You do you but please be aware.
Nope. The opposite. You want dense rocks that can’t hold water inside them, I usually use granite cause it’s the one abundant where I had to build (temporal) fire pits. Don’t use limestone, conglomerate rocks, and the like.

The ideal natural rock for fire stuff is pumice
I’ve only seen pumice stone used in (sheltered) gas fireplaces, idk I’m not really that much of an expert, I was told what I put in the comment when I was a child and brought some rocks for a fire pit my uncle was building and he said ‘No! Those will explode, look for some like these or these’ pointing to some granite and a big quartz (or quartz-like, I ain’t no geologist) chunk. The couple dozen (at least) times I’ve done it without an incident and a quick web search I’ve just done confirm that my folk knowledge is right.

Concrete that isn’t specifically formulated for high heat can explode. Is it guaranteed? Of course not, but getting the correct materials or at least lining your pit with fire rated mortar isn’t particularly expensive either.
Lava rock is a bit different from other rock… you should definitely have a metal insert in there if you’re using landscaping brick, it’s not meant for direct fire.
No, natural pumice holds moisture which turns to steam under heat and explodes from the pressure.
The only safe pumice is manufactured bricks made from pumice.
We used to do this at the house of a fellow youth organization member. They had a fire pit, lava rocks in the topiary beds, and a pool. We’d soak some rocks and then throw them in the fire. It would make a loud pop and we’d all laugh about how funny the “ash” felt when it hit us. And then one of the kids started screaming…
Fortunately, he only got a tiny piece in his eye, but the homeowners were like, “it’s harmless fun, that happens sometimes.” We stopped having gatherings at that house.
